It’s so great to hear that Leslie Nielsen will be returning to television in a regular role—that hasn’t happened since Police Squad! in 1982. Nielsen has had his fair share of TV guest appearances, and is likely best remembered for the Airplane and Naked Gun films, as well as his role in the Scary Movie films. Nielsen will be joining the NBC comedy pilot Lipshitz Saves the World, playing mentor to Lipshitz, the teenager who discovers he is the “one” to save the planet. Series writer Dan Fogelman wrote the part with Nielsen in mind, saying “I’m a lifelong fan and wrote the part specifically for him, never having met him, and with no knowledge of whether or not he’d take to it.” Fogelman has some writing chops, having co-written the Pixar film Cars and created a sitcom for the WB.

Now that we’ve gotten past the premieres of Prison Break and Vanished, we can ease into another week of programming highlights:
TUESDAY
Celebrity Duets (8pm on Fox): The latest Simon Cowell production debuts with Hal Sparks (Queer as Folk), Lucy Lawless (Xena) and Chris Jericho (WWE) among the eight celebrity contestants belting it out for the title.
WEDNESDAY
Bones (8pm on FOX): Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz return for the show’s sophomore season.
Justice (9pm on FOX): Victor Garber (Alias) helms yet another legal offering. I cross my fingers for him.
THURSDAY
MTV Video Music Awards (8pm on MTV): The awards show finally returns to New York after several years away in Miami. Hurricane Ernesto is disappointed that it doesn’t have a glam-filled occasion to ruin.
Eric McCormack—Done with Sitcoms?
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, NBC,
OK, so Eric McCormack has declared that he’s done with sitcoms. And how long should we expect that to last? He’s come off the wildly successful Will & Grace, but I don’t think he should be calling it quits on sitcoms all-together. If he really feels that way, perhaps it’s better to keep it to himself rather than prematurely announcing it to the world. True, McCormack has seen much success on the stage, and it’s likely he’ll go that route for awhile, but I wouldn’t discount the fact that he could return to a small screen comedy yet again. McCormack broke the news at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, saying he would likely return to the small screen, but “probably not in a sitcom, because I don’t think I can follow Will & Grace as an experience for me.” He went on to say that “the experience day-to-day was about as perfect as you can get.” Perhaps this is just an attempt to thwart any Seinfeld curses—steering clear of the sitcom genre for a brief time. We’ll see, Mr. McCormack.

Stephen Colbert’s Terminology Ranks in the TV Lexicon
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Award Shows, Comedy, Daily Show, The, Grey’s Anatomy, Internet, News,
Oh, you gotta love Stephen Colbert—once a fantastic part of The Daily Show, it seemed Colbert had a shaky start when he ventured into his own show, The Colbert Report. Not so shaky anymore, it seems, as Colbert quickly rose in popularity and has developed quite a following. To further solidify his status, the “word-trend” group Global Language Monitor has discovered that two terms from The Colbert Report were part of their annual survey of television words that have impacted language. Colbert’s use of “Truthiness” and “Wikiality” were included in the list of the top television buzzwords of the year. Other high rankers? “Katrina” (for obvious topical reasons) and “Dr. McDreamy” (in reference to Patrick Dempsey’s character on Grey’s Anatomy).
“Truthiness” is defined as “truth unencumbered by the facts,” while “Wikiality,” referencing the informational web site Wikipedia, is defined as “reality as determined by majority vote.” This is best explained by the voting off of Pluto as a legitimate planet by astronomers.
Colbert also should be applauded for his Emmy appearance—one of the highlights of the evening—as he expressed his upset over losing to Barry Manilow. Priceless.

It’s nice to see that Daniel Radcliffe is stretching beyond his role as Harry Potter... not that his bank account is exactly suffering with the never-ending films in the Harry Potter series. It’s been announced that Radcliffe will take on a role as the son of British author Rudyard Kipling in the TV drama My Boy Jack. The film tells the story of how Kipling was able to get his 17-year-old son an officer’s commission in the British army during WWI. Unfortunately, the boy never returned from the trenches and his body was never found, despite Kipling and his wife’s best efforts to locate him. “I’ve always been fascinated by the subject and think it’s as relevant today as it ever was, with young men still sacrificing their lives in the name of war,” said Radcliffe of his upcoming role. The movie will air next fall on Britain’s ITV1—no word on when we’ll be seeing it in the states.

The 2006 Emmy Awards
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Award Shows, Comedy, Drama, ABC, CBS, NBC, 24, Amazing Race, The, Daily Show, The, Desperate Housewives, Entourage, Grey’s Anatomy, House, King of Queens, My Name Is Earl, Scrubs, Talent, The Office, West Wing, The, Features,
As some of you might remember, TV Envy brought you live remarks during the 2006 Oscars. I had so much fun last time - I thought I would do it again for the 58th Annual Emmy Awards. Unfortunately, since I live on the West Coast, live blogging is not possible. I could cheat and write this while reading the online reports—but I won’t. I will keep my eyes focused on the TV screen before me and make catty remarks as I think of them in Pacific Standard Time.
Although I’m still a bit bitter that neither Lost or Desperate Housewives were nominated this year (apparently due to the recent changes in the nomination process), my annual viewing must go on. If someone can manage to eke out a win for either Entourage, The Office or Scrubs, I may be able to forgive and forget.
Okay—let the time-delayed festivities begin!

Forest Whitaker, Busy Philipps Join ER
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, FX, NBC, UPN, ER,
Andre Bauer, who was unable to fulfill his commitment to the drama ER, has been replaced by Forest Whitaker. Whitaker will play a man who comes into the ER with a cough, but quickly faces a paralyzing stroke—his story arc will take place over five episodes. Whitaker continues to be busy with the FX series The Shield, returning for at least the first two episodes of the next season. Whitaker is most famous for his many film roles, including Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Platoon, The Crying Game and The Panic Room. He’ll make a great addition to ER, now entering it’s 25th season (seriously, how long has this show been on?!).
Busy Philipps will also join the cast of ER with a recurring role as an intern. You may remember Philipps from the short-lived, but well-regarded Freaks and Geeks. She was also seen last season on the UPN sitcom Love, Inc.

K-Fed Gets Acting Gig on CSI
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, Reality, CBS, UPN,
Let’s just hope his acting is better than his rapping… Kevin Federline will be appearing on an upcoming episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, according to People magazine. The announcement comes shortly after his debut rapping at the Teen Choice Awards, which was panned by many critics and people with good taste. This of course isn’t his first time on the small screen, as he and wife Britney Spears experimented with the reality TV genre with their show Chaotic on UPN last year (Did anyone watch that?). The CSI appearance will be his first official acting gig, playing a “menacing, arrogant teen who harasses investigators Nick Stokes (George Eads) and Warrick Brown (Gary Dourdan) on a job.” Be on the lookout for the episode in October and pray there is no rapping involved.

Constantine Maroulis Takes it to Broadway
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, FOX, American Idol, Talent,
Constantine Maroulis, finalist from season 4 of American Idol, will be joining the cast of The Wedding Singer on Broadway. According to Playbill.com, negotiations are under way for Maroulis to join the musical, although the character has not yet been announced. Maroulis was last seen squinting and pouting on Idol, but seemed to do little after that, except for showing up in the Idol audience (still squinting and pouting). Prior to taking on the Idol competition, Maroulis graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music, appeared in indie films and off-Broadway shows. His highest profile gig was touring with Rent. While competing on American Idol, it was revealed that he was the lead singer for a hard rock band, but left the band to try his hand at Idol stardom. He will join The Wedding Singer on September 8th.
